What Should I Wear to My Dance Class?

Not sure what to wear to class? It’s fun to shop for dance and workout clothes, but not everything that’s available at the dance shop is ideal for class.

You need to be able to move comfortably and without restriction, and your instructor needs to be able to see and correct your body movements. We also want to make sure you have the appropriate shoes and gear for each class.

Long hair can also be distracting while you dance, so we recommend pulling it up for class. Specific hairstyles are required for some classes.

Here are the requirements for dance class attire taken from our dress code!

Creative Movement & Ballet/Jazz Combination Classes:

Leotard and pink tights. Dance skirts are permitted in this class. Both classes require pink ballet slippers; Ballet/Jazz also requires tan jazz shoes. Hair must be worn in a ponytail or bun.

Ballet/Pre-Pointe/Pointe/Repertoire:

AFAA class shirt is to be worn to and from class, however, it must be removed when class begins. Black leotard and pink tights; tights must be either footed or convertible for all ballet students. For Pointe students, convertible tights are required. No dance skirts are permitted in ballet/pointe classes; for modesty purposes, black fitted shorts (biker/dancer/gymnasts shorts) are acceptable. Dance skirt is optional for repertoire. Pink split-sole ballet shoes are required for all ballet and repertoire classes (preferably canvas). For Pointe, pink Pointe shoes are required and must be approved by an instructor to ensure correct size and fit. Hair must be neatly secured in a bun for class.
