As we rest this summer, it is important to remember to give ourselves time to rest in Christ as well. Matthew 11:28 says, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (ESV)
Christ gives us a simple command, to come to Him, then to abide. Christ does not want our souls to rest in what is happening now, instead, He wants our souls to rest in Him, and what is to come. Christ also gives us a simple promise, to give us rest. While indulging in my history reading this past year, I came upon a quote by St. Augustine: “Our heart is restless until it rests in You.”
Many people wander around trying to find their purpose in life; a sense of fulfillment. But whatever they partake in, if it is apart from God, will never satisfy them. Even if they owned all the material goods of this world, they would never achieve true happiness, true sympathy, and true rest; their souls would be left feeling empty. Not only does God promise us true peace and true rest, but He also gives us fulfillment. God’s purpose for our lives is to glorify Him and enjoy Him forever.
In conclusion, to find TRUE peace and rest this summer, we must first find peace and rest in God. Let all of us, no matter what our age or walk of life, take time to read the scriptures this summer, pray, and thank God for the perfect rest He gives.
