We are pleased to offer the following classes this summer and look forward to keeping your summer exciting. Whatever your child’s area of interest, we have several options to choose from. Registration is now open. Costs for each of the classes are listed below. No additional registration fee is required for Summer Workshops.
Theatre: Master Classes & “Arsenic & Old Lace” Performance
Our fun-filled and instructional Theatre Workshops will be held as day-long intensives during which students will be immersed into a different aspect of theatre performance each day. They will run from 9AM-5PM on June 4th, 6th, and 11th, and the cost is $40 per intensive (you may sign up for as many as you’d like!) Note: students will need to bring their own lunches each day.
June 4th - Acting
With Matthew Davidson
Have you always wondered how to cry on cue? Have you always longed for the chance to move someone to tears or chills whether on the stage or in person? Or do you simply long to be able to stand in front of a group of people and speak confidently and convey your thoughts and feelings in a direct and personal way? No matter what your intended goal or career, this is a great opportunity to learn some of the basic tools and tricks of acting. The truth is we “act” every day and In every situation. Shakespeare said, “All the world’s a stage”! This is your opportunity to learn how to step out onto that stage confidently and unforgettably.
June 6th - Monologues
With Matthew Davidson
This workshop will not only help you perform a monologue, but also will provide instruction on developing a monologue from start to finish. This includes interpreting the words, meanings, and inflections, as well as learning the dialect, cadences, and structures of monologues.
June 11th - Musical Theatre
With Dana Culberson and Matthew Davidson
Every musical theatre show has a good dance scene or two! This workshop will begin to teach students how to incorporate Broadway style dance (called Character) into their theatre skill set. After spending the morning dancing, they will spend the afternoon warming up their vocal chords! They will combine the dancing of the morning with singing and acting in the afternoon, and put on a short play when you pick them up! No prior dance, voice, or theatre training required.
AFAA is very excited to be producing “Arsenic and Old Lace” written by Joseph Kesselring as the first show in our annual Summer Workshops. This show will be an excellent opportunity for young adults ages 12 through adult throughout the community to come together no matter their acting experience, to have a chance to be a part of a show that is a staple of theatre history and an undeniable influencer of theatre today. Arsenic and Old Lace is a dark, lighthearted, comedy that follows the Brewster Sisters: slightly mad, spinster, heiresses with a desire to help lonely travelers who rent rooms in their home, in less than predictable ways. Surrounded by a supporting cast that includes their son Mortimer, a well-to-do theatre critic, and his two brothers: one, an unstable man who believes he is Teddy Roosevelt, and the other an estranged, maniacal, man of the shadows. Arsenic and Old Lace has been performed on Broadway over 1400 times by veterans of the theatre like Boris Karloff, and adapted into a film starring Cary Grant. This is an excellent show to have on your resume before college; as well as a perfect opportunity for the beginner to dip their toes into the world of theatre. It will be a fun, challenging, and exciting production to be a part of. Guaranteed.

We are thrilled to have Mrs. Stacie Brantley offering Art Camps with AFAA this year! Ms. Stacie has a life-long love of art, and has been creating pieces since she was a small child.
The goal of this camp is to enhance the lives of the students by encouraging them to use the process of creating art as a means of stress relief and self-expression and to develop an appreciation for the beauty and splendor of creation. We create because we are created in the image of our creative God. It is a blessing to begin to appreciate the intricate beauty of the world around us. Budding artists can try their hand at various mediums in the course of our week. We will also touch on the basic elements of design and color relationships. Scott Adams said “Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.”
